Free NH 2-substituted 3-arylindoles have been prepared usually in good to high yields through the palladium-catalyzed reaction of readily available 2-alkynyltrifluoroacetanilides with arylboronic acids under oxidative conditions. The reaction tolerates a variety of useful functional groups both in the arylboronic acid and in the alkyne, including chloro, formyl, and ester groups.

An efficient NHC-catalyzed domino oxidation/oxa-Michael addition reaction of 2-alkenylbenzaldehydes has been developed to afford 3-substituted phthalides bearing a C3-stereogenic center with a broad substrate scope and wide functional group tolerance. The preliminary results of the asymmetric process have been provided as well.

An FeCl2-promoted carbomethylation of arylacrylamides by di-tert-butyl peroxide (DTBP) is achieved, leading to 3-ethyl-3-substituted indolin-2-one in high yield. The reaction tolerates a series of functional groups, such as cyano, nitro, ethyloxy carbonyl, bromo, chloro, and trifluoromethyl groups. The radical methylation and arylation of the alkenyl group are involved in this reaction.
